In a minute I’m going to share with you three huge mistakes businesses make when it comes to their business website design and the internet.

Hi, my name is Kyle Dammann, founder of ten seven digital and over the last eight year’s I’ve worked with hundreds of small, medium and even large businesses to help them have more success online.

My experience has taught me that what you DON’T know about your online presence and your business website can hurt you!

The truth is, businesses that are well represented online are naturally exposed to a larger customer base, they are more likely to attract talented, web savvy employees, and they are more likely to sell more products and services, online and offline.

This leads me to those three big mistakes:

Number One. Businesses simply don’t put the web high enough on their priority list.  For whatever reason the web is put on the back burner.  I’d like to let you in on a little secret, while you’ve been sleeping, the world has gone digital.  We simply can’t afford to ignore your business website design and digital presence any longer.  Now, there are many reasons why your web presence might be lacking, but you don’t need to spend a fortune to put the web to work for your business.  Simple, Ugly websites often outperform expensive professional websites. That’s a fact.

Number Two. Many businesses have a website, but they’ve let it go for a long time, or they simply don’t know what to do with it.  If your website isn’t measurably driving leads, customers and sales to your bottom line, you aren’t using your website to it’s potential.  Again, This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune.  Sometimes $20.00 a month is all you need to keep things going in a positive direction.

Finally, the third mistake. Most businesses have no clue what opportunity the web has for them.  Every day that goes by, thousands of young, tech savvy people, get a little older, they buy homes, start families and become your potential customer. Trust me, they aren’t looking for you in the yellow pages, and they aren’t going to trade shows… They are looking for you online.

Are you well represented online?

Are you highly visible in search, social and mobile?

At the end of the day, I think most business struggle with this, because they just don’t know where to turn, or who to trust.

If you aren’t sure if your business is taking full advantage of the web, I want to hear from you.

The secret to getting more website traffic. (updated)

getting website traffic update

Getting website traffic is one of the more challenging aspects of building a successful business website.  It is also happens to be one the most important aspect of any successful site.

Traffic is quickly becoming one of the hottest commodities in the global economy.

After all, if you control the traffic, you probably have the gold!

So how do we get more traffic for our websites?

The best strategy that I have found is usually a mixture of organic traffic via consistent blogging and content creation, combined and supported by paid traffic via Facebook or Google. Paid ads can provide immediate traffic while an organic blogging strategy can provide long term sustainable growth and traffic.

This is all underwritten by the assumption that you have a good website with good content, clear offers and most importantly reputable analytics software installed and working on your site like Google analytics. Analytics software can help you keep track of your website performance in very powerful ways.

You’ve probably heard about Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short, and if you haven’t you will soon.  SEO has been a buzzword for the last five years and has spawned an entire industry. The trouble is, hiring an SEO expert is expensive, and the problem is, often times what works for SEO today to get you ranking in the search engines can sometimes change over time. Because of this, I recommend that you avoid “black hat” or shady practices that promise to somehow artificially boost your rankings in the search engines.

You can hire an SEO person to optimize your site, or you can do it yourself, but really here is what it getting long term organic traffic comes down to:

1. Unique high quality content: A website full of high quality, authoritative content is the foundation for any successful website. Think about your content strategy, and take some time to develop a plan of attack for your content.  Good website content is informative, entertaining and broken up with bullet points, headlines and compelling images. Don’t forget video too!

2.  High Quality Backlinks:  Backlinks are a way that search engines gauge your authority on the web.  For instance if you had a website/blog that specialized in finance, and you had top ranking websites like Forbes and CNN’s Money magazine linking back or referring to articles on your finance site, Google would then see your site as more authoritative and increase your pagerank.  Pagerank is just a fancy way of saying what score your website has in the eyes of search engines like Google. The best way to get quality backlinks and to build pagerank is to write high quality authoritative content and share it with others via sites of similar interest and the plethora of social media sites available to you at no cost!

3. A Well organized site:  Site structure is important mainly so Google and other search engine  robots can effectively read, rank and index your site according to what is most important. A well organized site includes a proper and logical hierarchy with common page names like Home, About Us, Contact, Store, Shop, etc. In keeping with this logical hierarchy, your articles and web pages should include relevant header tags and keywords related to your topic. You will want to ensure you have a well organize sitemap setup as well.

4. Social interaction: More and more, search engines are looking to popular social media sites like Facebook and Youtube for “social signals” about your website and your brand. The more you engage with social media the better. It costs nothing to setup a Facebook page and a Youtube channel. If you are just getting started and you are wondering where the best places to get free traffic from is.  Youtube and Facebook are usually the best places to start.

At the end of the day, don’t get too caught up in things like pagerank and SEO. Keep your focus on real, meaningful connections with your customers and prospects. This has been, and what always will be what drives successful business. Of course, one of the best ways to connect with potential customers is to consistently write or create high quality content and video.  So: Connection, Content and sharing Got it?

Do you have a success map for your small business?

Without a map, your business is lost at sea.

Digital Marketing Consulting
For 2013 and beyond, a business’s ability to integrate technology into their business will mean the difference between success and failure.

Is your business tech savvy?

If you had to grade your business’s technology on a scale of 1-10, how would you score?

If you aren’t sure, here are a few simple questions to ask yourself.

  1. Is my business using the internet and our website to measurably create new customers and sales on a daily basis?

  2. Am I able to measure the amount of growth and traffic my website is getting?

  3. Am I using technology to automate and streamline my sales process. Including building better relationships with our customers?

If you have answered no to any of these questions, chances are you are probably losing thousands of dollars in lost revenue. Not only that you are probably wasting thousands of dollars in employee hours simply by failing to leverage all of the communication and automation tools that are now available inexpensively to all businesses.

Technology used to be reserved for large corporations.

In the 1950’s a computer that was about as powerful as a modern wrist watch, used to cost a million dollars, and took  up an entire office building.  Now, the cell-phone that you have in your pocket that costs a few hundred dollars has more technology than the Apolo lunar capsules that carried our Astronauts to the moon and back.

Believe it or not, technology is the great equalizer for small businesses.

The trouble is, we see many businesses try to use these systems and fail.  The main reason being… THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO USE THEM!

If you are like most business owners/managers, you are just too busy to sit down and learn all about successful website design, or social media for businesses.

Do you have a plan to integrate technology?

You would be surprised how many business, small and large operate without any sort of plan or road map.  Operating a business without a clear and definite plan is like setting sail with a ship full of products and no destination or plan to sell it.

If you have realized that it takes more than a bill-board and an ad in the yellow pages to succeed in 2013, then it’s time you get a plan for digital success.

Truth is, it doesn’t take as much time as you may be thinking, and can be done for very little money.

True Success Is Measurable.

“I waste half of my money on marketing. The only problem is, I don’t know which half.”~John Wanamaker

John Wanamaker – “founder of modern retail” is known for his famous quote.  A philadelphia native and entrepreneur in the early 1900’s,  Wanamaker revolutionized the retail industry with things like money back guarantees and … way back then, a previously unheard of half-page ad in the newspaper.

Even though things were very different back then, Wanamaker shared the same problem that modern businesses have.

Tracking the performance of marketing spend.

One thing John Wanamaker didn’t have that every business owner has free access to is Analytics Software.  The software is easy to install and is offered up for free by companies like google. Analytics software is a Nerd-Word for software that helps you measure and track your growth and success online.

success is measurableYour website should be at the hub of all of your marketing efforts.

Driving all of your promotions to select pages on your website is a sure-fire way to measure response, and engage with your prospects on a deeper level.

Is your website equipped to convert visitors into leads and customers?

Google Analytics is free and easy to install.  We use it on all of our client’s websites.  Operating a business website without some sort of tracking software would be like driving a car without a speedometer or a fuel gauge.  Which of-course, is just plain silly-business.

Remember that true business success is always measurable.

Get on the right track by installing Google Analytics today.
